The valley is a green belt with the complicated geography of Granada. It has risen to separate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/en\/what-see-granada\/alhambra-generalife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alhambra<\/strong><\/a> from the <strong>Albayz\u00edn<\/strong> neighbourhood. A natural pathway linking two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In order to protect against the dangers of bulldozers and the urban development of the valley formed by the two hillsides below which the River Darro flows, several social movements, citizens&#8217; platforms, and public institutions have been fighting for some time to have it <strong>declared as a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC). <\/strong>\u00a0From all of us here at Cicerone, we want to congratulate all of those who worked for so long to make it possible.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/valledelDarro-e1461343149173.jpg\" alt=\"valledelDarro-e1461343149173\" width=\"806\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Valle del r\u00edo Darro (Granada) from Silla del Moro \/ Rafael Troyano \/ Radio Granada<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alhambra-patronato.es\/index.php\/Home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Patronato de la Alhambra,<\/a> one of the main drivers for the protection of this new BIC, started to work on the project in 2010, under instructions from its former director, M\u00aa del Mar Villafranca. After organising the conference in <em>Valparaiso, r\u00edo de Oro, <\/em>to tackle the relevance of the valley as the perfect accompaniment, the Nasrid complex became the project\u2019s greatest ally. In 2013, it published a book, <strong>Hacia un paisaje cultural: la Alhambra y el Valle del Darro,<\/strong> which raised the area being classified to the status of \u201ccultural landscape\u201d, helping to the point of heading the technical studies necessary for identifying and justifying the heritage value of the area.\u00a0The synergy between Culture and the Alhambra has come to fruition with the proposal covering more than 260 diverse heritage aspects.<\/p>\n<h3>Valle del Darro, free from urban development projects<\/h3>\n<p>Last week, Executive Management at Bienes Culturales y Museos took the penultimate step towards getting this unique spot added to the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2955 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Alhambra-y-valle-del-Darro.jpg\" alt=\"Alhambra-y-valle-del-Darro\" width=\"513\" height=\"342\" \/>General Catalogue of Andalusian Heritage Sites as a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC), under the classification of \u201cHeritage Area\u201d. In the near future, the 23 km<sup>2<\/sup> covered in the protection file will be protected forever, against controversial <strong>urban development projects<\/strong>, such as the controversial closing of the Granada ring road, or the famous lift up to the Alhambra.<\/p>\n<p>The Valle del Darro is an odd BIC due to the diversity of assets it includes, which individually do not add up to the value being placed on them, but as a whole and integrated into the terrain, take on meaningful importance for the historic heritage of Granada. \u201cThere is evidence of the valley being occupied from Roman times until the present day spread throughout the territory and also grouped within the urban setting of Granada\u201d. Among the <strong>Roman sites<\/strong>, a \u201cvilla and other important structures beside the Cortijo de Cortes, near where the Arroyo de Beas stream flows into the Darro\u201d have been identified. In the Valley of the Darro, there are also numerous <strong>remains from<\/strong> <strong>the Middle Ages<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>with numerous medieval farmsteads, defensive constructions, and, of course, the armed citadel known as the Alhambra. Together they form the \u201cterritory\u201d organised around the water system and <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2957 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/valle-del-darro-alhambra.jpg\" alt=\"valle-del-darro-alhambra\" width=\"335\" height=\"197\" \/>its collection of associated elements, as well as the historical road network.
