That\u2019s the way it\u2019s going in Spain, with <strong>\u2018Granaino Style\u2019,<\/strong> the irreverent, Nasrid take on the Korean \u2018Gangnam Style\u2019. It\u2019s a highly crafted joke, which has gone beyond Granada itself, laughing at its own stereotypes and showing off its unique characteristics to become a viral video which promotes the city as a tourist destination in more than 100 countries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/awhW-OSNL8A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The original \u2018Gangnam Style\u2019 is a parody in itself. The Korean singer, Psy, claims to live a life which adheres to the \u2018Gangnam style\u2019; the most exclusive area in Seoul. Yet, in the video, what he does is somewhat more tacky; the sort of thing a millionaire from that area would do. It\u2019s the Korean equivalent, despite the distance, of La Moraleja, or the Salamanca area of Madrid. However, the Granadian equivalent, Cecilio \u2013 patron of the city, San Cecilio \u2013 interpreted by Juan Vinuesa, fits all the stereotypes of the \u201c<strong>Granaino Style\u201d,<\/strong> which he would enjoy even more if he hadn\u2019t spent so much time looking for his friends, who are tucking into <strong>tapas<\/strong> and <strong>Alhambra beer<\/strong> \u2013 the <strong>1925<\/strong> reserva or \u2018minohs\u2019 as it\u2019s known locally, while they wait for him. Hungry and as it\u2019s time for an afternoon snack, he ends up heading to two more of the city\u2019s landmark companies: a sweet \u2018<strong>Marito\u00f1\u00ed\u2019<\/strong> and a <strong>Puleva<\/strong> milkshake. Paco Torres from Efecto Global and \u2018intellectual author\u2019 of \u2018Granaino Style\u2019, explains that the viral internet craze encouraged him to make a parody of Psy and as \u201cit had been a long time since Granada had gone viral like the video of the joke about the Granadian priest\u2019. That\u2019s how he got talking with the production company Studio Sur and the person in charge of the script for the comedians who make up the group \u2018MFGrana\u00edna\u2019, taking the city by storm via Twitter. Torres celebrates the fact that Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz, the Councillor for Tourism at the Ayuntamiento de Granada, has recognised that it is a \u2018very effective, enjoyable way of promoting the city\u2019. While Cecilio looks for his mates, he travels all the way <strong>from the<\/strong> <strong>Sierra Nevada<\/strong> to the <strong>beaches on the coast of Almu\u00f1ecar <\/strong>in less than an hour. While he visits Calle <strong>Zacat\u00edn<\/strong>, the <strong>Basilica of the Virgen de las Angustias<\/strong> or the Church of <strong>Fray Leopoldo<\/strong>, or even visit the <strong>Alhambra<\/strong>, the <strong>Albayz\u00edn<\/strong>, the typical <strong>Carmens<\/strong> (traditional Granadian houses with large, open central patios), the Granada CF Stadium \u2013 \u2018second? Please, tell me we\u2019re not second\u2019 \u2013 or dance the night away at the well-known local club, \u2018<strong>Mae West\u2019<\/strong>. \u2018We expected 20,000 visits and that itself would have been a great success, but we\u2019re already up to 520,000. It has also had views from over 100 countries and it just keeps on growing. We didn\u2019t expect this at all\u2019, says Torres. If that wasn\u2019t enough, at the end of the \u2018Granaino Style\u2019 video, they break into a \u2018Harlem Shake\u2019 at the Mirador San Nicol\u00e1s, joining the two main viral trends over the last few months, together. The protagonist, Juan Vinuesa from Albolote, took part in the video which one a Goya in 2012, \u2018Un Barco pirata\u2019 (A Pirate Ship), already placing the province on the map. Director Fernando Trullols thanked the town when collecting the award, as during filming, the guy now known as \u2018the Granadian Psy\u2019 pulled the wool over everyone\u2019s eyes and tricked them into believing the thieves played by himself, Ra\u00fal Ar\u00e9valo and Font Garc\u00eda, were born in his town. Behind the success is a full month of work, from the complex art of writing the lyrics \u2018the Korean language has many very short words, so adapting Spanish to fit the rhythm isn\u2019t easy\u2019, organising the locations, to filming, as they were hit by heavy rain. \u2018However, people had a great time. We met up to dance and loads of people joined in.
