{"id":329,"date":"2016-04-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/boabdil-keys-granada\/"},"modified":"2020-03-24T16:37:28","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T15:37:28","slug":"boabdil-keys-granada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/en\/blog\/boabdil-keys-granada\/","title":{"rendered":"Where did Boabdil handed over the keys to the Catholic Monarchs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, we like to talk about the curiosities of our city.\u00a0 Today, we discovered that a few days ago, <em>Ideal<\/em> published a news story about a historic part of Granada that is sometimes completely forgotten about.\u00a0 The place where Boabdil handed the keys to Granada over to the Catholic Monarchs.\u00a0 We already spoke about this incredible place a while ago. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/en\/blog\/alcazar-del-genil-almohad-palace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alc\u00e1zar del Genil: Almohad treasure hidden in the asphalt<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0It is, without a doubt, worth a visit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Every self-respecting <em>Granadino <\/em>will have heard <a href=\"http:\/\/lab.rtve.es\/serie-isabel\/rendicion-de-granada\/\">\u00a0<strong>the<\/strong> <strong>story about the handing over of Granada\u2019s keys<\/strong><\/a> by Boabdil to the Catholic Monarchs, and the last Moorish king\u2019s subsequent crying that led to his mother , the sultana Aixa\u2019s well-known phrase, <em>&#8220;do not cry like a woman for what you could not defend like a man&#8221; .<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-585 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rencicion-de-granada-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"rencicion-de-granada-1024x576\" width=\"509\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rencicion-de-granada-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rencicion-de-granada-1024x576-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/>Although, there must be only a few people who know that the handing over of the keys, the historic moment that has inspired many artists and has given rise to great works like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">La Rendici\u00f3n de Granada by Francisco<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pradilla\u00a0<\/span><em>, <\/em>took place next to the <strong>Alc\u00e1zar del Genil.<\/strong> It is a building of Islamic origin, known as the <strong>Palacio de Ab\u00fa Said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Jard\u00edn de la Reina (Queen\u2019s Garden)<\/strong> is the name given to the surroundings and exterior landscaped forecourt, located close to the left edge of the R\u00edo Genil river, right where <strong>Boabdil<\/strong>, the last Nasrid king, <strong>handed over the keys to the city of the Catholic Monarchs on January 2nd 1492, <\/strong>putting an end to the last glimmer of the Hispanic-Muslim al-Andalus.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know where Boabdil handed over the keys to the Catholic Monarchs?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2826 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/alcazardelgenil3-1.jpg\" alt=\"alcazardelgenil3-1\" width=\"580\" height=\"250\" \/>This historic palace\u2019s building was erected as an Alc\u00e1zar by Sayyid Ishaq ben Yusuf, the Almohad governor, who requested its construction in 1218 in an area destined to be the courtly recreational area. At the same time as it was being used as a working farm, and was where many large games and receptions were held.\u00a0 The archaeological remains of an annex building, where Boabdil lost his beloved Granada, will be open for visitation at the future <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estaci%C3%B3n_de_Alc%C3%A1zar_Genil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alc\u00e1zar del Genil station <\/a>on the city\u2019s metro line, which is scheduled to open at the end of the year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Source: <a
