That\u2019s why it\u2019s the oldest building in the monumental complex, located next to the Torres Bermejas. Despite being exceedingly practical, the building is designed with exquisite taste. It\u2019s Granada\u2019s <strong>most historic site<\/strong> and was first populated during the Roman Empire. After the fall, <strong>the Zirid Muslim dynasty found its home here<\/strong>. They began to build one of the most beautiful places in the world, which still remains one of a kind today. The neighbours in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/en\/granada-tours\/albaicin-sacromonte\/\">Albaic\u00edn<\/a> spoke of \u201cheading down into Granada,\u201d and they\u2019ve got a more community-oriented lifestyle than the other areas in the city.<\/p>\n<h3>The Albaic\u00edn\u2019s c\u00e1rmenes<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2496 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Carmen-martires-9-2.jpg\" alt=\"carmen de los m\u00e1rtires\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">What\u2019s a c\u00e1rmen? The Arabic word \u201cCarmen\u201d means \u201cgarden\u201d. It was used to <strong>name the residential houses which belonged to key figures<\/strong>, where nature is the protagonist. In Andalusian Arabic culture, nature played an essential role. Firstly, because of the love they gave the divine creation, and secondly, because they are a source of natural air conditioning. The best known are the Carmen de los M\u00e1rtires and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/en\/blog\/carmen-rodriguez-acosta-story\/\">Carmen de la Fundaci\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez Acosta<\/a>. This is your chance to <strong>see an example of Arab baths constructed in the 11th and 12<\/strong><strong>th centuries<\/strong>. It\u2019s one of the best-preserved in Spain, so it\u2019s always worth wondering: how did they make such perfect constructions? The reality is, we shouldn\u2019t be so surprised. There was a significant penchant for science within Andalusian Arabic culture.<\/p>\n<h3>Dar Al-Horra Palace<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-709 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DaralHorra-e1564665369420.jpg\" alt=\"dar al-horra palace fa\u00e7ade\" width=\"740\" height=\"555\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the c\u00e1rmenes and along the narrow streets of the Albaic\u00edn is the Dar Al-Horra Palace, <strong>home to the sultan, Aixa, mother of Boabdil, Granada\u2019s last Muslim king,<\/strong> and thus, the last king of Al-Andalus. As it simply couldn\u2019t be any other way, the palace has a central patio, at the heart of which is a pond. The Albaic\u00edn just isn\u2019t the same without water and its whispers.<\/p>\n<h3>Corral del Carb\u00f3n<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-946 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/corralcarbon-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"corral del carbon in granada\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">This is a 14th-century Kahn or Caravanserai, which was used as storage. It was joined to the souk or the Medina by a bridge. After the Christian conquest, it was a home for the coal men. However, it became an Open-Air Comedy Theatre or was used as small apartments. It\u2019s so important that in 1918, it was declared a National Monument. Today, it\u2019s the heart and soul of cultural activities.<\/p>\n<h3>Casa de Zafra<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1215 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciceronegranada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/casazafra3.jpg\" alt=\"casa de zafra in granada\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">This is the living proof of <strong>what Andalusian Arabic homes were like<\/strong>. The houses were built around a courtyard with a pond. The rooms of the house were built around it to make it a home for a normal family. We\u2019d suggest you pay plenty of attention to the decor, as it is both unique and prestigious.<\/p>\n<h3 align=\"justify\">The Maristan<\/h3>\n<p>The Maristan is a medieval building located in the city of Granada. It was originally built as a hospital in the 14th century, but it was later used as a mint (Casa de la Moneda), which led to several renovations. Over time, it was used for other purposes: a storehouse, a prison, and military barracks. By the 19th century, the building was almost entirely demolished.<\/p>\n<p>The Maristan is an excellent example of Nasrid architecture.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">It was included in the route in January 2023.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The Dobla de Oro route is very complete and enables us to appreciate the true grandeur of the Hispanic-Muslim culture.
