Granada\u2019s classic square\u2014Where locals mingle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You may wonder, \u201cWhy is Plaza Bib-Rambla considered the most \u2018Granadina\u2019 square?\u201d<\/em> In this article, we trace its history from medieval market to modern meeting point, and describe what you\u2019ll see and feel there today\u2014from flower stalls to caf\u00e9s\u2014so you understand why locals still consider it one of the true hearts of the city.<\/p>\n

One visitor may not know the Granada city centre<\/a><\/strong> without passing through the \u201csquare of Granada\u201d, well-known as Bibrambla in the old Town of Granada<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"bibrambla-granada-1024x680\"<\/a>The origin of the square as a meeting point for city residents dates back to Nasrid times when, at the heart of Granada\u2019s winding alleys and narrow souks, an esplanade made up of sediments of the nearby river Darro opened up, strategically located between defensive walls, the commercial and mercantile centre of the city, Zacatin and Alcaiceria<\/strong>, and the religious centre, the Great Mosque.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bibrambla Granada<\/h3>\n

Albeit in this first Muslim period, Bib-Rambla was the heart and soul of life and medieval society<\/strong>, the scene of many commercial exchanges, and it was in this square where all of the city\u2019s public celebrations have taken place: processions, autos de fe, tournaments, executions, jousts, popular celebrations, and even bullfights.<\/p>\n

Today it is one of the city\u2019s most important social centres, where celebrations and flea markets take place, a place to read jokes or quintillas<\/em> during Corpus<\/strong>, dance on D\u00eda de la Cruz (Day of the Cross),<\/strong> or simply a place to have an afternoon snack or a stroll.<\/p>\n

And also, our old Cicerone Kiosk was located in Plaza Bibrambla, in the heart of Granada, the one that makes the city\u2019s heart beat and breathes life into its streets. Then, the kiosk turned out to be too small to receive our clients, and we decided to open our Customer Service Center – Shop. <\/strong>So we tried not to go too far, and we stayed on the 10th of the nearby Calle San Jer\u00f3nimo.<\/p>\n

The history of the \u201csquare of Granada\u201d<\/h3>\n

The name \u201cBib-Rambla\u201d refers back to its Muslim origins, as an esplanade formed by deposits from the nearby river Darro.\u00a0 This door of the Arenal, or Bib-Rambla,<\/strong> was in the area that is today occupied by buildings bordering Calle Mesones, and was known as the Door or Arco de las Orejas<\/strong>.\u00a0 A reconstruction of this arch or gate that was destroyed at the end of the 19th century does exist, but it isn\u2019t in Bibramba, nor close by.\u00a0 In order to see it, you have to climb the Colina de la Sabika<\/strong> via Cuesta de Gom\u00e9rez, where we can find it, hidden deep in the Alhambra forests, in the dense vegetation that already forms part of its history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
