Taracea Workshops

Taracea is traditional marquetry and is typical from the Spanish city of Granada. With this technique, different kinds of materials are inlaid in wood following intricate patterns. It dates gfrom the XIV and XV centuries, when it was used in making furniture and other objects in the Palace of the Alhambra.

Taracea desings are inspirated in the wall and ceiling decorations of the Alhambra. Materials used include wood such as mahogany, ebony, rosewood, walnut, as well as bone and metal.

Pieces of the different materials are inlaid into a wooden surface, covering it completely, then it is polished. In times gone by, the surface was lacquered, but nowadays, taracea is finished in poliester for greater protection and durability.
