Albaicin, The origin of Granada

This guided walk tour takes you through the most emblematic and famous quarter of Granada. It is the real origin of Granada where still today the Moslem heritage is recognized. This quarter is a World Heritage Site declared by the UNESCO.

We walk into the quarter walking through winding narrow streets that lead us to its heart. We show the elements that best identify it today: different sections of the defensive wall, water cisterns, gardened “carmenes” and traditional houses, urban infrastructure, small intimate squares, impressive landscapes, parish churches, a panoramic view of the Alhambra, etc.

The guided walk tour “Albaicin, the Origin of Granada” illustrates the most important events of its history and shows the cultural values that identify it today and always: the cultural splendour of the Kingdom of Granada, the Conquest of the city, the Alhambra and the Generalife, the Moorish tragedy, characteristics of the Moslem city, the importance of the mosques, from trade to handcraft, traditions and customs of its people, the Albaicin quarter past and present, its urban infrastructure and the water system, the “Carmenes” of Granada and other typical houses, the mudejar arquitechture in Granada…

This walk follows the winding urban structure of the Albaicin quarter, which is pedestrian almost all the way. The duration of the tour is of approximately 2,30 hours and the level of difficulty is medium-low. It adapts to all ages. This guided walk has to be booked in advance and the client can choose the starting time in accordance with the availability of CICERONE.

There are two meeting points:

1- For groups transferring by bus, the meeting point is at the “Mirador de San Cristobal, Carretera de Murcia” ( Murcia’s Road), highest spot of the quarter.
2- For groups without bus and transferring on foot, the meeting point is at the Plaza Nueva (New Square), by the “Real Chancilleria”
